Multiplayer Games

Multiplayer games are powered by the most compelling opponent available to any game designer: another human being. Human players are creative, adaptive, unpredictable, and motivated in ways that no AI can fully replicate. When you beat a computer opponent, you have defeated an algorithm. When you beat a human opponent, you have out-thought, out-reacted, and out-executed a person who was genuinely trying to beat you. The difference in satisfaction is significant.

Browser multiplayer games split into two broad categories: real-time games where players compete or cooperate simultaneously, and asynchronous games where players take turns on their own schedules. Both have significant appeal. Real-time multiplayer captures the electricity of simultaneous competition — the back-and-forth of a close match, the reading of opponent tendencies, the pressure of a time-sensitive decision. Asynchronous multiplayer enables competition between players in different time zones, across different schedules, without the need for simultaneous availability.

For our multiplayer collection, we focus on games that work well with two players on the same device as well as online configurations. Shared-screen multiplayer — where two players sit at the same keyboard and compete in split-screen or turn-based formats — has a particular social value that online-only games cannot replicate. Playing on the same device creates a shared physical experience that has a different social texture from remote competition.

Fighting games, quiz games, racing games with two-player modes, board game adaptations, and cooperative action games all appear in our multiplayer collection. The quality bar for multiplayer games is actually higher than for single-player games in some respects, because a poorly designed multiplayer game creates a bad experience for two people simultaneously rather than one.

Balance in multiplayer games deserves special mention. A game where one player or character is clearly superior to all others is not really a competitive game — it is a puzzle with an obvious solution. We specifically look for multiplayer games where the competitive landscape feels reasonably fair: where skill is the primary determinant of outcomes, where different strategies can all be viable, and where a less experienced player can see a path to improvement through practice rather than feeling that the outcome was determined at character select.

Trivia and quiz games are a wonderful entry point to multiplayer gaming for players who are not comfortable with fast-reflex games. The competition in quiz games is entirely mental, the challenge is universal, and the social conversation that naturally arises around trivia questions adds a layer of entertainment that the questions themselves only partially supply.
